Process: What to expect
Exterior
When painting the exterior of a house with or without chipping paint a bonding primer is used to adhere to the existing surface. “Back brushing” serves to fill in small gaps and holes, to seal the surface from future water damage, and ensures the top coat is uniform and will last many years. If necessary caulking any visible gaps and patching or replacing any rotted wood. All coats applied with sprayer. Touch ups with mini roller and brush. Main products are Sherwin-Williams Peal Bonding Primer and Duration Exterior, which is a high-end paint with moisture and UV protection. Zinsser Peal Stop used when Peal Bond is unavailable.
Interior Walls
When painting walls Custom Home Finishes offers an increased quality above just applying a new coat. Such as light checks for old patches and nail holes and the trim taped to expose any gaps between the wall. Then filled with caulk and painted over leaving a sharp clean line. To get the straightest ceiling line I recommend painting the ceilings first. I primarily use S.W. Duration Interior which is a high-end wall paint that can support lower sheen without sacrificing durability. Higher sheen for bathrooms and kitchens is recommended. Know that if you are picking your own product, more than 2 coats may be required for coverage.
Enamel
Scope of work can range from furniture to cabinets to entire houses (doors, doorways, windows, baseboard, crown, etc.) All coats sprayed. Refinishing existing enamel generally means quick sand and minor patches on any scratches or cracks that might have formed before spraying. Refinishing stained wood to painted enamel, removing brush marks on old enamel, and raw unpainted wood takes 2 coats of primer in part to prevent the waterborne enamel from “water popping” the wood and leaving uneven finish. Distressed look also available. No drips or sags in the final product. Oil primer used where possible for easier sanding and better coverage. Unfortunately because of material shortages oil enamel isn’t consistently available so for now water based enamel paints such as B.M. Advance and other alkyd’s; and urethane acrylics are used.
Stain
By mixing custom stain recipes, balancing reds and yellows, Custom Home Finishes can match any stain color. From black to pickled white. Using clear, semi-solid, and solid stains; also gel and wiping stains. Sealed and Finished with Mautz varnish which repels standing water without clouding or fading. Perfect uniform application guaranteed on raw or freshly milled wood. Re-finishing options are offered ranging from top coating gel stain for a low cost, to full strip down and an all new wiping stain applied. Re-facing is not offered.
Drywall Repair, Texturing, and
Acoustic Ceiling Removal
Drywall repairs include: large holes or missing pieces, water damage, plaster repair, large cracks or seams, outlet or cover removal and patch, and hanging new sheet rock. Popcorn and knockdown patches can be blended in to existing texture so as not to draw the eye. “Orange peel” texture can be added to flat wall patches to blend in old roller stipple with new patch. The process for popcorn removal starts with covering all walls and floors to contain debris and dust. Then mist with warm water and use a flat blade to gently remove the now soft compound used to create the texture. Next sand, spray primer, and several layers of patching and light checking to ensure a smooth surface. Then a final coat cut and rolled leaving a uniform flat finish.
Estimates & Billing
In order to provide the best possible painting experience to all my customers I require an in person walkthrough of the project area or rooms involved prior submitting a bid. I do this for several reasons. Most importantly being able to observe and ask questions so I can get to know the space as well as the customer. That’s the only way to create a customized solution that fits your needs and doesn’t break the bank.
First Estimate is FREE and emailed within 48 hours of having a look at the project. I provide a detailed scope of work to be completed so we are both on the same page. Outlining the things we discuss during the walk around. Along with an itemized list of materials and expected hours per task to help you understand where the costs are coming from. All Materials are billed at less than retail.
Scope Creep: Know your project
Scope creep or feature creep is continuous or uncontrolled growth in a project's scope, generally experienced after the project begins. This can occur when the scope of a project is not properly defined or documented.
Adding to the scope at any point after the original estimate will be either flat rate of $60 for a revised scope estimate, or a verbal agreement of the additional scope and you will be billed for the additional Time and Materials. Recorded and itemized on a T&M worksheet.
What is Custom Home Finishes?
My name is Guy Hammink. For now it’s just me. From website and bidding to prep and spraying. I started my finishing career at the age of 17 as the Finishers Apprentice of a shipwright company in St. Paul repairing and updating vintage wooden boats. My time there taught me a lot about material and time management. As well as plenty of sanding and applying coats. Later in life I was given an opportunity to work for a family owned residential painting company, also in St. Paul. I spent years learning the finer points of quality work on the most expensive homes in Minnesota. Inside and out. After 4 pay raises and proving my attention to detail I was asked to work under the Pre-Finisher at the shop, who would be retiring in 2 weeks. After a short 2 weeks I was put in charge of our shop off of West 7th. I honed my spraying, staining, organization, and management skills. In the words of the production manager, my boss, I was able to achieve an ‘automotive finish’ on my enamel and varnishes. As well as being able to manage a dozen concurrent projects from drop off and sorting through to wrapping and loading. Shortly after they merged with a much larger company I parted ways and started Custom Home Finishes in April of 2017. Since then I have worked for house flippers, renovators, remodelers, new construction, realtors, and families. Putting out a quality product that will leave a lasting improvement is something that is very important to me.
